10 Simple Drills Every Beginner Golfer Should Practice

ree

1. The Gate Drill (Putting)

Place two tees just wider than your putter head and practice stroking the ball through without touching the tees. This builds a square, consistent putting stroke.

2. The Ladder Drill (Distance Control)

Place balls at 5, 10, 15, and 20 feet. Putt each ball to stop near the hole. Great for distance control.

3. The Tee Drill (Swing Path)

Stick two tees in the ground a club-head width apart. Swing through them cleanly without touching. Trains straight, centered hits.

4. The Alignment Stick Drill

Lay an alignment stick or club along your feet to check aim. Repeat until your eyes and body “feel” what proper alignment looks like.

5. The One-Handed Chip Drill

Chip balls using only your lead hand. Builds feel and reduces “flipping” at impact.

6. The Step-Through Drill (Tempo)

Take your normal backswing, then step forward with your trail foot as you swing. This promotes smooth rhythm and weight transfer.

7. The Pause-at-the-Top Drill

Pause briefly at the top of your backswing before swinging down. Eliminates rushing and builds smoother tempo.

8. The 9-to-3 Drill

Practice half swings where the club goes from 9 o’clock to 3 o’clock. Builds consistent ball striking.

9. The Circle Chip Drill

Drop 5–10 balls around a green in different spots. Chip each one within a few feet of the hole. Improves variety and feel.

10. The Eyes-Closed Drill

Hit short putts or chips with your eyes closed. Trains focus on feel rather than sight.

Takeaway: Practicing the right drills builds muscle memory faster than mindless swings.
